If you are a leader, or aspiring to be a leader, then you will have a much easier time of leading effectively and meeting your goals and potential if you have a few key qualities that allow you to effectively inspire and manage the people you are leading or looking to lead. But, don’t worry, because almost all of these qualities, if you do not already possess them, can be developed over time.
That being the case, let’s take a look at 5 of the most important qualities every leader should develop if they want to be the best they can be.
One – Self-awareness
It is fair to say that all of the best leaders, whether they’re at the top of a multi-national organization or running personal development courses, have an unshakeable self-awareness. This is an important quality for any leader to have because the better you are able to understand yourself as a person, and the better you understand your own strengths and weaknesses, the better you will be able to work on yourself, but also the better you will be at recognizing and supporting your team with theirs too.
Two – Creativity
The best leaders are always creative. They need to be because being a leader often means solving problems and finding a smooth way through tricky situations. You need to be able to think outside of the box to do this kind of stuff, which is why so many courses in leadership development for executives focus wholly or partially on the creative side of life and leadership.
Three – Compassion
Good leaders should always be compassionate. Sure, there are tons of stories out there about hard, demanding leaders who push and push and push their team, but you know what? They are rarely the most respected, and they rarely get the best results. Good leaders understand and empathize with their teams, and this enables them to eastern their staff’s respect, and thus, get the best out of them. It is also likely to lower the levels of people quitting and allow you to retain staff more easily because they will trust and respect you.
Four – Communication
If you cannot communicate effectively with people, then you simply cannot be a great leader. You need to be able to very clearly set expectations with your team, give them instructions, and, of course, be able to listen to their problems and concerns in such a way that you really hear them and act on what they are saying. If you can’t do this stuff well, then your business will not be nearly as effective or efficient as it could be, and your team will not be as in sync as they should be.
Five – Vision
Every good leader has a vision for what they want their organization to be and where they want to take it. They use their vision to inspire their team to work towards that goal alongside them. Vision gives everyone purpose, so trying to run an org without it is likely to lead to failure.
Develop these five qualities ,and you’ll be a great leader.
