Now that we’re beyond the Christmas holidays, most folks who don’t love the holidays finally breathe a sigh of relief. No more forced togetherness. Or feeling like they are left out. But sometimes we don’t think about all those “Hallmark Holidays” like Valentine’s Day. It can be hard to find joy in the season when you’re alone. Without family or friends nearby, it can be difficult to make the most of the holidays.

Thankfully, there are several things you can do to make simple holidays less lonely. From starting a new tradition to taking some guilt-free me time, here are four ideas to help you feel less lonely.

One – Start a New Tradition

Starting a new tradition is one of the best ways to make your holidays feel meaningful and special, even if you don’t have family or friends around. It could be something as simple as a special recipe you make each year or a unique holiday activity you do. If you’re in the mood for something a little more ambitious, consider volunteering your time to a local charity. You’ll be able to give back and make a difference in someone else’s life while making your own holidays more enjoyable.

Two – Plan a Getaway

If the idea of spending the holidays alone fills you with dread, why not plan an escape? Whether it’s for just one day or an entire weekend, getting away from it all can help take the edge off of being alone during the holidays. The options for a getaway are endless; you can spend a weekend at the beach, explore a new city, or take a road trip and make some new memories. From staycations to international travel, planning a getaway can be just the thing you need to break up the monotony and make lonely holidays more exciting.

Three – Treat Yourself to Guilt Free Me Time

One of the best things about being alone during the holidays is that there’s no pressure to do anything other than what makes YOU happy! Instead, take advantage of the downtime to relax and indulge in some guilt-free me time. You can spend this time doing anything you want that you never get time for during the year. This could include watching Easter movies available here or reading a new book. Or, you could take on a mini project like learning to cook something new or organizing your home in a way that brings you joy. This alone time can help you feel refreshed and more confident as you move into the new year.

Four – Learn Something New

Instead of focusing on what you don’t have, take this time to learn something new that interests you. You can enroll in an online class or find a free tutorial to help you master something like baking or photography. Learning something new and cultivating your skillset is a great way to keep loneliness at bay and make the most out of your time alone. While you might not be in the mood to be overly productive, having a goal or project to focus on can help keep your mind off of feeling lonely.

Being alone during the holidays can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be. With these four ideas, you can make your lonely holidays a little less lonely and a lot more enjoyable. As you can see, there are plenty of ways to stay busy and find joy in the season when you’re alone. So don’t be afraid to get creative and make the most of your time!
