There are many great reasons to think about going for a career change. If you are feeling bored of your current line of work, then changing things up could enable you to feel as though you are getting a lot more out of life. Similarly, you will often find that the right kind of change of direction can enable you to enjoy your day-to-day work more. This is important for your overall mental health. But how can you make a career change, especially if you are in mid-life?

Here’s four steps to help you along the path to making a change.

Step One – Identify Your Why

One of the most important steps to making a major change in your life is to get clear on your WHY. Because once you know the deeper answers to what is causing your dissatisfaction at work, you’ll be able to begin taking action. It doesn’t matter what it is, it’s completely personal – but make sure that you are really clear on it before you do anything else.

Step Two – Choose Your Dream Career

There is no point in switching careers at this stage in life and not simply going for exactly what you most want to do, so you will need to make sure you identify and choose your own dream career. Remember, there are no rules here, but if you have a very clear idea of what you want to do, you should go for that. This might be a long-held dream, it might even be the career you had always wished you had pursued. But in any case, it needs to be the thing you most want to do in the world.

Step Three – Gain The Necessary Knowledge

It’s vital that you are gaining whatever knowledge you might need in order to advance further in that new career path right away. The sooner you learn what you need to learn, the more likely it is that you are going to be able to propel yourself in the way you would most hope. There are many ways to do this, from taking online bachelors degrees to simply reading up on the latest texts in your chosen field. But make sure that you are gaining that knowledge in some way or another.

Step Four – Expand Your Network

It is always helpful to have a network that you can rely on and call on as and when it might be necessary. Before you go into a new world, this is of course not always going to be in place, so you might want to think about expanding out your current network in order to make room for this new world. You might be surprised at how easily you can do this, largely through connections of connections, and it’s something that you are going to want to think about as you make that scary but exciting first step.
