A career rut is something that many of us will experience at some point in our lives. Unfortunately, all too often, many of us end up stuck in these work doldrums for far too long. This can have a major negative impact on our mental well-being.

But when we know exactly what want to do with our lives, not feeling able to get out and do these things can make matters much worse. It may be that you lack the experience to guide you into the career that you are interested in, or you may not have the confidence to push yourself forward for jobs in your desired field.

There are always ways of achieving your career goals. Sometimes it just takes a bit of time and effort, but if you put your mind to it, you will be able to get to where you want to be in life.

Kick a Career Rut by Studying

One of the barriers to your chosen career path may be a lack of education in the subject. There are many professions that require you to have a qualification such as a degree in order to gain employment. One example would be the need to complete an accelerated nursing course before gaining employment as a nurse.

There are often barriers to us actually even being able to join a course of study. For example, you may not be able to afford to take the time away from earning money. You may have bills to pay and mouths to feed. That means staying in your current job. Another common barrier is the inability to travel or move to the area where the course is being held.

There are, however, many online and distance learning opportunities, and you can study many subjects in your own time, from wherever you are. If you are unable to pay for your course outright, taking out a loan for your career development is a constructive use of credit and should be seen as an investment in your future.

Building Your Confidence Levels Always Helps Bust a Career Rut

A major hurdle is often our own self-confidence. Often, the longer you have worked in a stop-gap job, the harder it can be to believe we are able to do anything else. Often, we are very critical of ourselves, maybe even more so than a recruiter might be. This can prevent us from pushing ourselves hard enough.

If you do not believe that you have relevant experience, offer to volunteer or do some work experience for a few days in your chosen field. By trying to gain experience in this way, you will show a willingness to learn and develop your personal skills.

Other people may always appear confident to you. You might believe that they know exactly what they are doing. It is possible to present yourself in a more confident manner. By doing this, you will be able to win people over and gain the experience that you need to be able to develop your skills.
