Many of us have felt lost and confused at some point in our lives. Defining exactly what we want from life and where we want to end up is something that we often put off because we are used to our dreams being just that – dreams. However, all of us have a true calling in life, we just need to find what it is. Below are six tips for helping you to identify the best route from where you are now to where you want to be in the future.

One – Identify Your Strengths And Skills

Everyone has their own individual skills and strengths, identifying these is the first step towards working out what you want to do with your life in the long-term.  Of course, you can always learn new skills if they are relevant to the career path that you want to pursue, but you will find it much easier to learn new skills if they appeal to your existing strengths.

Many of us don’t really think about our personal strengths until we find ourselves in a job interview-type situation. There are probably a handful of qualities that leap straight into the front of your mind when you are considering your own strengths. However, you should be looking to dig deeper than these and keep going until you have a clear picture of who you are and what you can do.

Don’t limit yourself to marketable skills. Things like attention to detail, good organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a larger team are all skills that will be helpful in defining your plans for the future, even if they are not marketable skills in and of themselves.

Two – Define Your Ideal Work Environment

Take some time to think about exactly what kind of work environment you would like to work in if you could choose from anything available. If you find an office environment conducive to your personal goals, then there is nothing wrong with aiming for an office-type job. However, if you have always dreamed of working outside or working from home, don’t be afraid to look for opportunities that will enable you to do this. It might seem like a pipe dream for you to land a job in your dream industry or field, but if you never make a serious effort then you will never know for sure.

Only you know what your ideal working environment is, and only you can define this for yourself. Don’t feel as if you have to aim towards a career in a particular field or setting if it is not one that appeals to you personally. People who doggedly pursue a particular career, not because they are passionate about it but because they feel obligated to do so are much more likely to find themselves dissatisfied with their jobs.

Three – Establish Your Long-Term Goals

Identifying your true calling in life is difficult if you aren’t clear about where you want to end up. If you don’t have a clearly defined set of goals in mind, you need to think about this very carefully. You should not be afraid to aim high and to set yourself a significant challenge. If your one ambition in life is to author a book, for example, then don’t tell yourself that it is beyond your reach, get writing and try to achieve it.

No matter how big or small your objectives are, you need to be able to break them down into a sequence of individual steps. Once you go through this process of breaking your goals down into smaller chunks, you will often find that seemingly insurmountable tasks are actually quite achievable if you approach them in the right way.

Not everyone has a specific long-term goal that they want to achieve. For example, many people know that they want to help others in their professional life but aren’t too fussed about how they accomplish that. It might be difficult at first, but it is well worth taking the time to define exactly what it is that you ultimately want from your life.

If you feel that you currently lack the skills that you need to be able to achieve your goals, don’t be afraid to postpone your push toward your dream career so that you can earn the relevant qualifications or complete training.

Four – Ask Other People About Their Experiences

No amount of research from a distance is going to equate to first-hand real-world experience. If you know anyone who has already worked their way up to the position or job that you covet, ask them about their experiences. You could spend all day typing questions into Google, and still not learn half as much as you would from a single hour-long conversation with the right person.

Any advice or experiences that you encounter can be valuable regardless of whether they are positive or negative. Negative experiences can often help you to temper your expectations and will prevent you from romanticizing your chosen career. If you do fall into the trap of over-romanticizing things, you may well find yourself disappointed down the line. Negative experiences can also teach you what you need to look out for on the way to your dream career and what the potential pitfalls are.

Five – Set Your Own Personal Boundaries

Everyone has their own set of beliefs and values that they hold dear. You should never have to compromise on these in pursuit of your true calling in life. Be prepared from the very beginning to lay down your own personal red lines, and don’t break them for anyone. Working a job that conflicts with your ethos is bound to end badly, and your true calling in life cannot by definition be something that is at odds with your boundaries.

Six – Research Any Options Thoroughly

Whether you decide that you want to enter the world of work and set off down a new career path, or you think that enrolling in a university course and earning a qualification first is the better option for you, you should research your options very carefully before you decide what course of action to take. Many jobs, careers, and university courses are very different than they appear from the outside. We mentioned the value of asking other people about their experiences earlier, but remember that people can only report their experience to you, you need more than one data point if you want to make an informed decision about what to do.

There are lots of ways that you can approach your research. The most obvious way of gathering information is by a simple Google search, but there are lots of other ways that you can find out about potential callings that interest you. For example, if you are thinking about enrolling in an MBA course, with a view to pushing your career to the next level, keep an eye out for The MBA Tour events near you. The MBA Tour – https://www.thembatour.com/ – tours the globe, bringing top business programs to cities around the world to give candidates the opportunity to meet face-to-face with admissions representatives. An MBA is essential for anyone certain their true calling is in the world of business. Perhaps that’s you!

Identifying your true calling in life can be quite the journey.

Whether you are a young person with the whole world at their feet or someone who has already lived a life and is now looking to start a new one, it can be every bit as scary as it is exciting to pursue your dreams. The key to success is starting off on the right foot. If you take the time to define who you want to be and where you want to be in life, it is much easier identifying a viable path to get there.
