One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn (time and again) is that my mind and soul need quiet and order to thrive. And I’m not just talking about the beautiful sound of silence. I’m talking about the sacred space to stay connected to who I am and what I desire.

Let me begin by telling you that I’m not going to climb up on a soap box to deliver one of those kumbaya preachy-from-on-high posts about how you need to light three candles, stand on your head, and spend hours in meditation in order to “achieve enlightenment”.

I’m a strong believer in rituals, but I believe that your rituals must not only connect you to yourself, but be practical. Because, let’s face it, you actively occupy your hustling lifestyle.

In order to have ritual that matters and is effective, you need a sensible way to create a daily life that you love.

I know that you want to feel nourished. I also know that you have bills to pay, carpools to drive, groceries to buy, meals to cook, and people who need your love and attention. And, frankly, I understand that there isn’t a lot of “me time” left over for you at the end of the day.

What you need, then, is a sacred pause in your own sacred space on a regular basis. But in order to do that, darling, you are going to need to eliminate the noise in your life.

One of the biggest challenges in our modern lives is the auditory noise: the TV, the radio, the news, our iPods, streaming music, and noisy neighbors. There’s also the noise of constantly being connected: social media, email, texts, and the urge to binge-watch Orange is the New Black.

And then, there’s the physical noise. Yes, my dear, I’m talking about the clutter.

Let’s begin with that pile of magazines – because you plan to read them one day, and then you’re going to create a vision board for your perfect life, right?

How about that closet of yours (and the dresser drawers): stuffed to the gills with too much clothing that doesn’t fit, or that you don’t love, and – let’s be honest – there are probably a week’s worth of shoes strewn across the floor.

Are any of the flat surfaces in your home bare? Could a new neighbor stop by to borrow a cup of sugar without you dying of embarrassment (or you hiding behind the couch pretending that you aren’t home because the house isn’t company-ready)?

Sugarplum, you need sacred space in your home so that day in and day out, so you can successfully navigate through the tasks you need to participate in (like the aforementioned work you do to pay the bills and care for the people you love).

Everything in your world – be it relationships, food, work, media you consume, or your surroundings – either feeds you energetically or drains you. And I can promise you that clutter and excess physical stuff in your space always drains you.

I know from (shameful) experience how easy it is to go from tidy to a hot-mess.

I am not one of those naturally organized people, I am the gal whose natural tendencies are to leave cabinet doors open and leave droppings everywhere I go. And I tell you that I have to relearn this lesson time and again because handling the clutter of everyday life is one thing I have to consciously manage.

Clutter drains you and it distracts you; your messy places move you away from the sacred and towards simply surviving.

Now, let’s get serious about your deep desires and long-term goals. You can’t focus on those life-giving dreams when you your surroundings are literally draining the energy from your ability to pursue them. To give those dreams the fuel they need to grow into your reality, you need sacred space to make the plans on how to get from here to there.

I was never able to make significant progress on any of my deep dreams until I got a handle on my environment.

Clearing away what I didn’t need or love allowed me to see where I was getting in my own way.

It can feel so daunting to begin. I know overwhelmed is an understatement. Begin by focusing on one single area in your home where you do your dreaming or creating and designate it as sacred for you. Then continue the process by focusing on another area the next week and another space the next.

Work your way through your home until your main spaces of living your life – your kitchen, your bathroom, your office, your bedroom, and your closet – feel clear and supportive.

Your goal isn’t to create a magazine perfect home, the point is to cultivate a space that supports your life and your desires. Darling, you owe it to yourself to cut through the excess and carve out space that feels sacred.

You deserve clear, sacred space because you, your life and your dreams matter.

“Your sacred space is where you can find yourself over and over again.” ― Joseph Campbell
