We can feel that when we are looking to make the life that we want that our age can be a barrier. And that there are parts of our life that we may feel that we can’t get back. A very good example is when we start our careers. We may think that because we graduated from college that the career we have is the one we should stick to for life. However, what I know to be true is that no matter our age we have the power to change. Any and every area of our lives.

With a new year – and new decade – on the horizon – for many it’s time to think hard about what you do for work. While not always an easy decision, making a career change could be a very smart decision for 2020. But before you leap into a new stage of life with your career, it’s important to get some clarity.

Here’s three things to consider if a new career is on your mind for 2020.

One – Understand What You Do Best

While we may have a burgeoning passion for something that doesn’t mean it’s a good career path. What we must remember that if we are to start down a new career path, it may take some time to acquire these new skills. Something like design or careers in software can take a lot of getting used to, especially if you don’t have the skills.

While there are so many online courses such as Architecting on AWS that can help you too to acquire the skills a lot of it is to do with understanding your current skill base and building on it. A new career can take a long time to build up and this is why you will have more of a head-start if you understand what you are better at.

Two – Learn About Your Chosen Career

Learn as much as you can in as much detail as humanly possible. It’s so easy for us to look at a job page and think about the qualifications that we need to get but we have to remember that it’s not just about the job but it’s about that feeling we get from the occupation. Speak to people who are already in the industry, make sure you get a proper appreciation for the career in the round and if there are opportunities for progression, but also look at what would happen if you were to get a job in that industry tomorrow.

Would you be starting at the very bottom? In which case, are you happy with learning the ropes. And potentially taking a reduced pay?

Three – Don’t Leap Into The New Career

It’s always important to look before you leap . And if you are struggling to find the right career or you think that something is perfect for you on the surface that you really give it the time and thought it deserves. A new career can be an escape route from your current one. Remember that wherever you go, there you are. This is never a good reason to take up a new career. When you feel that you have something more to give you should decide to adequately research the opportunities but you also need to remember that if you are a good fit. But you should also think about that feeling that you’ve done something worthwhile.

Sometimes it could very well be the fact that you just need to make some alterations in your present job. But if you are adamant that you need to make a new change in life and a career alteration will do it, you need to prepare.
