One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in life is that you are always in a position to reinvent yourself. Especially when it comes to your work life and you’re thinking about a career change. Yes, I know that the older you get, the scarier it can be to change. Yet, having an unfulfilled career as you get older can be hard to bear.

It’s not uncommon for people to get through the early period of their working lives (their 20s and 30s) and want something different. There is also something about reaching mid-life than can send you longing for a new challenge for the end of your career.

The truth is, it’s also not uncommon for people to feel the passion leach out of them because they’ve been working a job for no other reason than the money for the past ten years. Nurturing your passion is not easy especially as we get older and our passions change. The person you wanted to be when you were 18 years old may not be the same person as right now.
The thing is, that’s perfectly OK! Perhaps you want to step back from being in the management pool and you would like to go back to insurance agent training and start your own business. Maybe you want to go back to college and learn a whole new trade entirely and get a new degree.

Here are three reasons you should say “yes” to a career change if you are getting itchy feet.

One – You are desperate for a brand-new challenge.

You could be content with your job and the people you work with but that doesn’t mean you feel challenged in your role. Getting up in the morning and going to work should be something that fulfills you in every way, but if you are not feeling fulfilled then you need to consider venturing out of your depth. Challenging yourself can feel much more satisfying and make you feel much more accomplished day-to-day.

Two – Your values have changed.

Like many relationships, we grow away from our jobs sometimes. The role that you built out now has a ceiling, and you have to try and push past that ceiling if you want to go anywhere else. If your values have changed over your life, you may seek out some kind of enlightenment or awakening elsewhere. Maybe you could be a freelancer and have more spare time. Maybe your concerns and priorities of your home life have changed and now you want something a bit more challenging. Either way, when your values change, so should your job.

Three – You are ready for a new focus.

Sometimes, the job that we are doing does not allow us to spend time on other things in life. Maybe you are bored of all the long overtime hours and you are ready for a step back. There is so much more to life than work and sometimes we need a career that really allows us to acknowledge that. Some people opt for part time work rather than full-time work and they still end up feeling fulfilled and are financially safe.

No matter how old you are, remember you always have the opportunity to choose a new path.

Starting a new career can sound challenging. But it’s also exciting. Particularly at an age where you feel settled in your life.  Because no matter how great things may be, a lack of fulfillment or burnout can affect not just your career, but your home life too. So taking that risk may be worth the efforts for overall happiness.
